We are Robert and Rebecca Cooley. We live in Lima, in a centrally located
municipality called San Luis. About one
third of Peru's population (approximately 8.4 million people) lives in the 318
square miles that constitutes the urban area of Peru's capital city. Lima is the world's 18th largest city. We are the directors of AIM's base in Lima, Peru.
On my first short term mission project to Peru in
2002, when I was 50 years old (my wife was not on that first trip), I heard
God's voice as clearly as have ever heard any human voice. He said, "Robert, if you will say ‘yes' to
me, I will use you."
I was not anticipating or looking for a revolution of
this nature in my life. It took four years for my wife and me to
extract ourselves from our middle class lives and our middle class
commitments. We sold our house, purged
our possessions, sold my business and moved to Lima, Peru in 2006 (we did
return to Peru twice in the interim). Two
daughters (both of them married) remained in the U.S., while our youngest
daughter came with us. Our youngest
daughter is now married to a Peruvian who is also in full-time ministry.
